Hailey House

Have you ever wondered what a typical day looks like for a resident in Ballarat Aged Care? Brenda, a resident of Hailey House, shares how she spends her time and some of her favourite parts about being a resident.

“I’ve lived at Hailey House since August 2011 and feel very safe and cared for here. I love waking up in my room that has all my special possessions and bits and pieces in it.

I see the nurses in the mornings and afternoons, Karen, Julie and Helen, and we always find something to have a giggle about!

We all eat breakfast together, which is nice a social. The staff members on duty remind us of the day’s activities and write them up on the whiteboard. A few of us like to go to the activities room early to knit and chat. At the moment we are knitting squares for charity. It makes me feel good to know that I can help others in this way.

Julie and Beth are the activities staff and they always have plenty of things for us to be involved in. They start each session by reading the newspaper to us and we have a discussion about current affairs. We all look forward to hearing the joke of the day and working out some of the puzzles, and during footy season we like to know where our teams are on the ladder and who is winning the Hailey House footy tipping competition.

There are a lot of activities that take place throughout the day, such as nail care (I like having my nails shaped and painted), art and craft, word searches and puzzles, or we can relax and watch an episode of our favourite TV show. One of my favourite weekly activities is when the Delta therapy dog visits on a Thursday morning. I like to spend time with them.

If the in-house hairdresser or a specialist doctor is visiting that day, we may have an appointment to attend. We go on outings as well. I’m really looking forward to our upcoming outing to the movie theatre to watch Andre Rieu in concert.

Before lunch we have exercises. Lunch is another chance to have a meal with friends and have a chat.

At night time we have dinner, and we all look forward to our themed dinner nights. We like having pizza or a sausage sizzle with a dessert that we haven’t had for a while.

I attend monthly focus groups to decide on the types of activities we would like the following month. We also have resident/relative meetings where we find out about any changes and can ask questions. Our manager Linda, ward clerk Erica, all the care staff and volunteers are always happy to help out with any worries or assistance I may need.

I always say that I am never bored in Hailey House. There is always something to do and someone to talk to. It is my home and I am very happy.”
